Software Update Overview

Although there may be other or newer updates on the web, you will find the latest stable releases of SYNC 3 that we currently ship with our kits. There are separate links for navigation and non-navigation software updates. Do not try to install the wrong software package on your unit as it will not work and may damage your SYNC 3 module. We do not provide any technical support or take any liability for these software packages. We only host them as a convenience to our customers.

PLEASE NOTE: Unless you are experiencing an specific issue, we do not recommend upgrading the software.

Don't Bother Reading This Section

3.0 and 3.3 contain the SAME basic functionality. 3.0 is the latest major version for most SYNC 3 systems and new builds are continuing to be released by Ford. 3.3 is a newer software line for certain (not all) 2019 vehicles that have some advanced vehicle features that SYNC 3 has to communicate with. Ford changed the way they were installing software on these modules - therefore 3.3 is not designed to be installed on modules equipped with 3.0 or lower. If you have 3.2 or higher, you will use the 3.3 update below. If you have a current version of 1.0 to 3.0, you will use the 3.0 update below. YOU CAN NOT INSTALL 3.3 on a module that does not already have 3.2 or higher - PLEASE DO NOT TRY.

PLEASE NOTE: Part numbers determined by removing the module and looking at the part number on the white sticker. We do not provide support in determining which upgrade is required or issues as a result of the upgrade process. Installing version 3.0 and higher in some older vehicles with the two-screen instrument cluster will cause "Bluetooth" & "USB" to no longer show as a source selection in the cluster. You can still select these as a source from the touchscreen and have it play track information on the cluster.

Software Update Installation

Step 1 of 3

Prepare to download SYNC software update files to your computer.

  1. You will need a USB storage drive to transfer the software update files from your computer to your vehicle.

Make sure the USB storage drive:

    • is empty
    • can hold at least 32 GB of data
    • is not password protected
    • is formatted exFAT

  2. Download the appropriate file from the list above.

Please do not download this file directly to your USB drive!

If your browser prompts you to do so, choose to "Save" the file to your Desktop or a similar location on your computer's hard drive.

Keep your USB drive nearby. You'll need to use it on Step 2.

Step 2 of 3

Unzip SYNC files and move them to your USB drive.

Already know how to do this step? Move on to Step 3 >

  1. While you wait for the file to download to your computer's hard drive, insert the empty USB storage drive into your computer's USB port.

  2. Once the download is complete, locate the file you just downloaded - it should now be saved to your computer's hard drive.

You may need to navigate manually to the location to which you saved the file in Step 1 (ex. "Desktop").

TIP: If you did not specify a location for this file in Step 1, check for the .zip file in your computer's "Downloads" or "My Documents" folder. The file may have been saved to one of those folders by default.

    * Your filename may differ.

  3. Right-click on the .zip file, choose Open with, and select Windows Explorer.

If your computer has a third party extraction program such as WinZip, 7-Zip or WinRAR, you can also use that option to unzip and extract your files. For more information on how to unzip and extract files using one of these programs, see the corresponding third party developer’s website.

  4. Select all of the items inside the folder. Drag and drop them onto your USB drive.

NOTE: Installing the software update files in your vehicle works only if the SyncMyRide folder and additional file(s)* are visible on the USB drive. Don't combine or delete any of the files.

    * Your filename(s) and number of files may differ.

  5. Select your USB Drive to view its contents and ensure that the correct folder and files are listed. You're now ready to take the USB drive containing the software update files to your vehicle and install the updates to SYNC.

  6. Right-click on your USB drive and choose "Eject" to safely eject the USB drive from your computer.

Step 3 of 3

Install update in your vehicle.

  1. Take the loaded USB drive to your vehicle.

  2. Start your vehicle and plug the USB drive into the SYNC USB port.

Make sure your vehicle is turned on and running.

Can't find the SYNC USB port in your vehicle?
Check your Owner's manual to see where it's located.

  3. SYNC 3 should automatically initiate the software update installation process. Once it starts, wait for the update files to completely install. It may take up to 10 minutes for the update to start. DO NOT REMOVE THE USB DRIVE.

Installing the update files to SYNC 3 should take about 30 minutes.

Do not remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle while this update is in progress. Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC may quickly display “Installation Complete.” Ignore this message. It refers to a specific phase of the installation, not the overall update process. The system will reboot, which takes several minutes. Do not attempt to use SYNC during this time. After the system reboots, SYNC will display a pop-up requesting the owner set up Automatic System Updates, please press “Ask Me Later”.

Approximately 10 minutes later (timing may vary per update), SYNC will display “Installation Complete” and request the owner to remove the USB drive from the USB port and perform a complete ignition cycle.

It is now safe to remove your USB drive and turn off your vehicle. The vehicle is required to be completely off for at least 5 minutes.

NOTE: Once you have successfully installed the software update in your vehicle, you will need to re-pair your phone with SYNC.
